Fish often end up in the intake area to hydropower plants on their migration downriver. Fine screens with narrow gaps between the bars should prevent fish from ending up in the turbines. That is a good thing. But theoretically this interrupts the fish’s migration. This is not a good thing, which is why systems are needed that allow migration to continue quickly and safely. We typically opt for fish slides that empty out in the backwater. Other systems, such as the fish lift, which KLAWA helped to develop, remove fish directly in front of the screen.
